.NET 1.1 Install Problems on VISTA SP1

If you have problems installing .NET 1.1 updates offered by Windows Update or Microsoft Update, or have difficulties in manually installing various updates and patches, the following procedure should solve the problem.

The basic procedure can be found in a number of articles. The basis of this procedure documented here came from  Peter Bromberg and the full article can be found at:

http://petesbloggerama.blogspot.com/2007/09/kb929729-windows-update-failure-easy.html

In the article reference is made to the dotnet cleanup tool at the following location.

http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip

However, this location may not be responding. If that happens, then the tool can be found at other locations such as

http://atwin.net/blog/2008/04/30/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool/

SUMMARY OF INSTALLING .NET 1.1 with all updates.

Download dotnetfx_cleanup_tool, dotnetfx, dotnet 1.1 SP1 and dotnet 1.1 KB929729.

Step 1: Run the dotnetfx cleanup tool and select to remove [cleanup] .Net 1.1

Step 2: Install .Net 1.1 [dotnetfx.exe]

Step 3: Install .Net 1.1 SP1 [KB 867460]

Step 4: Install .Net 1.1 Hot Fix [KB 929729]

After installing all of the above, your system will also become eligable for installing the RC of Vista SP2 if you have registered for this update. SP2 will not install if there are any outstanding required patches for SP1.
